suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle, the girl with kaleidoscope eyes

I have been having a very lovely email chat with a dolly out there who was in search of some inspirational eye makeup, similar to our beloved glam hippie. Her request got me thinking about my own makeup routine. I've been in this tragic winter rut where I feel accomplished if I swab on some eye liner and quickly pinch an eyelash curler through my lashes. Well, that will not do! I'm supplying some fab photos to help us all through the winter drear, hopefully giving you all a little inspiration to lift your spirits (and your lashes!)
With colors galore, glitter, shimmer, and tons of lashes, here are my favorite girls with kaleidoscope eyes:

Twiggy looks marvelous, abandoning her mod androgyny for a mass of curls (and stars!) and heavily contoured colors

Lauren Hutton opts for muted colors of burgundy, purple and orange for a startlingly gorgeous result

I loved when it was de rigueur in fashion of the sixties to paint your eyelids so heavily that they would droop!

Anjelica Huston rocked the scant-eyebrow look, compensating with tons of color on her lids

So many eyes, so little time! From the Pablo Manzoni crafted look in the upper left corner, to lady bug lids and petal lashes - so much inspiration!

Elizabeth Taylor is most famous for her violet eyes, but it's interesting to see how her different films - like Cleopatra and Doctor Faustus - played them up in different ways

Biba babe and supermodel Ingrid Boulting

Lovely hippie face paint

Jean Shrimpton is a constant source of makeup inspiration - her eyes are gorgeously full, it's easy to see how she captivated the likes of David Bailey and the editors of Vogue and Harper's

From lash line to eye brow, green shadow in varying shades is perfect for any occasion!

Marissa Berenson is the ultimate beauty - I love her looks here rocking silver glitter, caterpillar lashes, and electric shadow

Various covergirls of the sixties, sporting shadows, shimmers, and jewels

Pamela Des Barres (and the rest of the GTO's - check out the star eyes in the left photo!) always looked lovely with her painted-on lashes, half-moon creases, and hearts

Peggy Moffitt - always so daring, and yet so perfect. I don't think she ever misstep with her look

A Peggy-inspired film, Who Are You Polly Maggoo?, shows a young model in similar Moffitt makeup

Runway models of today sport the over-the-top glam look on their eyes

Hippie face paint - such a dream!

The rebel girl of the modeling world, Veruschka, was never one to shy away from the most daring looks and editorial creations - she always pushed the envelope of what was 'beautiful'

Another one of fashion's bad gals, Donyale Luna, rocks some serious ear gear and eye paint

hey babe, what's in your eyes?

A (relatively) subtle sixties eye makeup look - just a simple black line across the upper lashes.

Penelope Tree rocking gold chains and spidery eyelashes.

That darling, daring Audrey Hepburn in a promotional shot for How to Steal a Million.

Jean Shrimpton on the cover of Beauty by Vogue.

Twiggy showing the camera how she applies her legendary eye makeup.

Ultra glamorous model Marissa Berenson poses with tassels in her hair and electric green eye shadow and baby pink blush.

Peggy Moffitt manages to apply eye makeup that upstages this wild Rudi Gernreich print.

Flower child Sharon Tate sports her heavy Valley of the Dolls-era eye makeup along with a purple caftan and hippie staple, a paisley head band.

Edie Sedgwick, known for her legendarily luxurious eye makeup application, poses in the latest sixties baubles.

Yé-yé superstar France Gall looks the essence of badass cool in thick winged eyeliner and a cloud of smoke.

A model from the mid-sixties recreates a peacock feather in an elaborate blend of eye shadows.

Peggy Moffitt, shown here applying her iconic lash paint.

Supermodel Veruschka photographed for Vogue in light lipstick and heavy eyes.

Gorgeous Twiggy shows up the final product of her makeup madness.

Edie Sedgwick successor Susan 'International Velvet' Bottomly sports eye makeup very similar to the Factory Girl herself.

Elizabeth Taylor in her role as Cleopatra, the film that single-handedly started the elaborate eye makeup craze of the sixties.

A model sporting a more classic evening look, complete with lace decals on the eyelids.

Jayne Mansfield, seen reapplying her already over-the-top makeup, in the mid-sixties.

Marissa Berenson, seen again in gorgeous eye-catching makeup.

Liza Minnelli in her Academy-Awarding role in Cabaret.

The most glamorous hippie I've ever seen.
